Projection mapping on murals is one of the most captivating art forms alive today — and yet most people have never heard the term until they witness it in person. At MAPPLIGHTS, it’s what we do: we take existing street art and murals and transform them into living, breathing, light-driven experiences.
This guide breaks down exactly what projection mapping is, how it works on murals, and why Montreal has become one of the most exciting cities in the world for this art form.
What Is Projection Mapping?
Projection mapping — also known as video mapping — is a technique that projects animated images onto non-flat surfaces, perfectly following their contours and shapes. Unlike a standard projection on a flat screen, mapping uses specialized software to warp and adapt the image in real time to the exact shape of the target surface.
The result: a mural that comes alive, a building that appears to transform, or an artistic installation that tells a story through light and motion.
Why Street Art Is the Perfect Canvas
A mural is already a living surface — it has identity, color, and narrative. Projection mapping doesn’t replace that identity: it amplifies it.
When we project onto an existing mural, several things happen at once. The original artwork’s colors interact with projected light to create effects impossible to achieve any other way. The muralist’s lines and shapes become natural guides for animation. And the audience — often familiar with the piece in daylight — rediscovers it completely once night falls.
This is the magic MAPPLIGHTS creates in collaboration with muralists across Montreal and Canada.
How Does It Work, Step by Step?
1. Artwork analysis — We start by photographing and scanning the mural in high resolution. We study its composition, color zones, and directional lines. This step always involves a deep conversation with the artist to understand the meaning behind the work.
2. Animation design — We then create custom animations that respect and extend the muralist’s vision. Every movement, every transition is designed to enhance — never overpower — the original piece.
3. Technical calibration — On the night of the event, we install the projectors and calibrate the mapping to the millimeter. Projector power, distance, angle — everything is calculated based on the actual conditions of the site.
4. The show — Once darkness falls, the mural comes alive. This moment of revelation consistently creates wonder and surprise in audiences, even those who knew the artwork well.
What Surfaces Can Be Mapped?
Projection mapping works on a wide variety of urban surfaces:
Painted murals and frescoes are ideal because they already offer a carefully composed visual structure. Building facades allow for large-scale shows visible from a distance. Sculptures and 3D installations create spectacular depth effects. Temporary structures and festival stages allow for entirely custom-built experiences.
Projection Mapping in Montreal
Montreal is a unique city for projection mapping. Its mural scene is one of the richest in North America — the Plateau, Rosemont, and Saint-Henri neighborhoods are filled with work by local and international muralists.
MAPPLIGHTS regularly partners with Montreal-based muralists to create shows that bring their work to new audiences. We’ve collaborated with Festival MURAL, the City of Montreal, Up Here, French Theory, and festivals across the country.
Montreal’s long winters and vibrant summer festival season make it a natural home for immersive light art — projection mapping thrives in this culture.
Projection Mapping for Festivals and Events
If you’re organizing a festival or event and want to integrate a projection mapping experience on a mural or facade, here’s what you need to know.
Planning ahead is essential — ideally 2 to 3 months before the event for design work and any necessary permits. All technical logistics are handled entirely by our team, from equipment selection to on-site installation. Every show is unique and site-specific — each experience is created exclusively for the artwork and the location.
